Myopia in adults, in everyday life
Steiner Research studies what happens to myopia after childhood: which daily habits go with change, how adults measure and manage their own vision, and what the right level of correction is for people who spend their days at screens.

Why adults
Most myopia research focuses on children. Far less is known about adults, even though myopia can keep changing well into adult life and most adults now spend their working day at near distances. The International Myopia Institute lists adult onset and progression as an open area of research (Bullimore et al., 2023).
Research programme

- Optics and evidence reviews. Defocus approaches compared in principle, correction levels for adults, home measurement methods.
- Existing case records. Descriptive analyses of a public, de-identified registry of adult case reports, 2013 to 2026.
- Everyday habits. Surveys and consented logs: screen time, near work, outdoor time, day-to-day variation in vision.
- Clinical measurement. Refraction and axial length measured in university clinics, from validation studies to a long-term adult cohort.

Reach for research recruitment
Recruiting adults is the hardest step in adult myopia research. Our audience of adults with an active interest in their own vision makes it possible: 276,000 newsletter subscribers, 70,000 YouTube subscribers with 7,300,000 video views, and a 33,000-member discussion group.
Jake Steiner
Founder and Research Director, Steiner Research
Steiner Research
Jake Steiner is an independent researcher and the founder and research director of Steiner Research. His work focuses on myopia in adults: how refraction changes after childhood, the role of near work, screen use and outdoor time, the optics of defocus, the level of correction adults are given, and how adults can measure their own vision reliably.
He has worked on adult myopia for almost 20 years, and since 2013 has documented adult case reports publicly. He curates the EndMyopia Case Report Registry, a public, de-identified dataset of 423 published case reports (2013 to 2026), and is the author of a descriptive preprint based on it. He has written more than a thousand articles and produced 470 videos on myopia and visual habits.
He is building a long-term research programme on adult myopia with university partners.
